Cinnamon, Citronella, Citronella, Basilic African…essential/aromatic oils
Essential oil, or sometimes plant essence (from the Latin essentia, ‘’nature of a thing’’), is the concentrated, hydrophobic liquid of a plant’s volatile aromatic (odoriferous) compounds. It is obtained by mechanical extraction, steam distillation or dry distillation.
Other plant extracts are obtained by extraction with volatile non-aqueous solvents (hexane, ether, etc.), while a new extraction process has recently been developed: supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. In all these cases, we are no longer talking about essential oils, a term reserved for the products of aqueous distillation, dry distillation or cold expression, but about plant extracts which go by different names depending on the successive processes applied to them: concretes, absolutes, resinoids, oleoresins, and so on.
Lastly, extraction without distillation using alcohol, liquid water or a mixture of the two, goes by different names depending on the methods used: herbal tea, maceration, decoction, hydroalcoholic extract, tincture, etc.
All of these are grouped together under the generic term ‘natural complex substances’ (NCS).
